The Centre for Human Genetics, Bengaluru invites applications for the MSc degree to be awarded by Bangalore University
The MSc degree programme in Human Disease Genetics aims to fill an important need in the country. We live in an age when genetics and molecular biology based approaches are being used for the diagnosis and care of medical conditions. The terms "preventive" and "personalized medicine" are commonly used in conjunction with these approaches. It is thus necessary to provide opportunities for learning in both the science and the ethics behind these advances, through exposure to both fundamental biological concepts and clinical medicine. The degree programme thus addresses an interdisciplinary area at the interface of modern biology and medicine. This unique course is composed of a comprehensive set of lectures, laboratory work, discussions and seminar sessions. Faculty at the Centre, the distinguished visiting faculty associated with the Centre and eminent scientists and medical practitioners from within and outside India will comprise the teachers.
The curriculum includes a range of subjects from fundamental biology, genetics and population biology to clinical genetics and genomics. Taken together they provide for a comprehensive education that will assist a student in contemporary bio-medical research and applications. Students will be kept up to date with modern techniques, with training in advanced DNA methods currently used to uncover genetic correlates of a range of human disorders. The course will also include first-hand experience in genetic counselling, including spells in clinical settings and formal courses on the ethical and legal issues related to human genome research. Students in their final semester will be expected to carry out a short research project. CHG faculty conduct active research into the biology of human genetic disorders, cancer genetics, evolutionary biology and other aspects of fundamental biology. Their valuable research experience is expected to especially help students interested in pursuing a career in research in bio-medical and clinically relevant areas of biology.

The quality of education in CHG is one of the best! It is not surprising that around 95% of students have either taken up PhD admissions in esteemed universities or centres, or jobs in well recognized companies towards the end of their masters or soon after that.

Some of the international places where our students went to do PhD: University of Jena (Germany), Max Planck Institute (Dresden) Max Planck Institute (Dortmund), University of Purdue, North Eastern University (Boston), University of Pittsburgh, Baylor College of Medicine (Texas), European School of Molecular Medicine (Milan), EMBL (Rome), University of Notre Dame, University of Otago, University of Dunedin and University of New Zealand.

Some of the national centres where our students went to do PhD: IISc, NCBS, JNCASR, CDFD, NIRRH, TIFR, AIMS, Institute of Bioinformatics, Amrita University, IISER Mohali, IISER (Trivandrum), IIT Gandhinagar, InStem and BITS Pilani.

Many of CHG students also preferred corporate jobs. Such students were recruited in a variety of industrial organizations that engage in genomic, genetic or molecular biology research. The list of such companies is big! Examples include Medgenome and Syngene

Facilities:

CHG has a state-of-the-art facility for molecular biology, sequencing, high-end microscopy, teaching labs and class rooms. Most of the teaching is also done, using such facilities, by scientists and clinicians. The facilities have enabled high-quality research publications by the scientists.

The institute is situated on a beautiful campus with own hostel.

Welcome to CGH
Centre for Human Genetics, Bengaluru invites applications for research positions leading to a PhD degree to be awarded by Manipal University.
Candidates with a Master's degree in any science or a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, medicine or allied sciences with a minimum of 55% or equivalent grades are eligible to apply. It is preferable, but not mandatory, that at the time of application, the candidates have cleared a national-level examination and procure a research fellowship tenable at CHG (such as GATE/CSIR/UGCNET, JRF exams conducted by DBT/ICMR, JGEEBILS, Entrance test conducted by Manipal University and the like). Selected candidates will have to appear for an interview. Successful applicants who lack financial support will be paid a stipend (equivalent to that of a project assistant) by the Centre, and will be encouraged to clear a national examination and obtain a fellowship within a year of admission to the Ph.D. programme.
